Hong Kong's government has confirmed a new Minimum Allowable Wage (MAW) for foreign domestic helpers, effective for contracts signed on or after 30 September 2025. If you're currently employing a helper, renewing a contract, or hiring for the first time, here's exactly what changed and what it means for your household budget.

What's the New Minimum Wage?

The Minimum Allowable Wage for foreign domestic helpers has increased from HK$4,990 to HK$5,100 per month, a rise of 2.2%. The government said the adjustment takes into account Hong Kong's economic performance, labour market conditions, economic outlook, employers' affordability, and helpers' basic living needs.

Does the Food Allowance Change Too?

No. The minimum monthly food allowance remains unchanged at HK$1,236 for employers who do not provide free food to their helper directly.

When Does the New Rate Apply?

The new wage applies to employment contracts signed on or after 30 September 2025. If your contract was signed on or before 29 September 2025 and submitted to the Immigration Department by 27 October 2025, it can still be processed under the previous rate of HK$4,990. Contracts signed from 30 September onward must reflect the new HK$5,100 minimum, with no exceptions.

What Should Employers Budget For?

With the new minimum wage in effect, it's a good time for employers to review their total monthly cost of employing a helper, which includes the wage itself, the food allowance (or actual food provided), and other statutory obligations such as insurance and MPF contributions where applicable. Renewing your contract soon? Make sure the new terms reflect the updated minimum wage to stay compliant.
